A lifelong resident of Waukesha County, Chuck studied art at St. Norbert College.
Following an MBA from Marquette University, this "right brain" influence led him to a career in advertising,
where he was Creative Director and Principal of a multi-media agency.
Chuck now devotes a significant amount of his time to his one "true" passion, fine art. His
preference for oils and an impressionistic style translate into high energy works, featuring
sun-lit subjects that are saturated with color. His unique "Renaissance" style involves
painting his subjects "backwards," from dark to light on sanded panels. His subjects explore
combinations of the color spectrum in light and shadow, and allow his paintings to express
power and vibrancy.
"I am a student of the California impressionist school;
as well as an admirer of contemporaries James Stagg, Michael Stiernagle, Camille Pryzwodek
and Connie Hayes....colorists who bring intensity to their work, and color value straight from
the tube. In my paintings I keep the colors saturated, using violets and blues to replace black,
and greens and oranges to replace browns."
In recent years Chuck has gained a national reputation as a portrait artist. His portraits
are rendered in two distinctly different styles; a subtler, photo-realistic pencil style,
and a more dramatic, narrative oil painting technique. He particularly enjoys the challenge
of accomplishing a technical "likeness," yet not allowing that goal to diminish a vibrant,
dynamic work of art.
"Portraits are a passion for me. Pure, unadulterated joy. A joy I am hopeful shows in my work.
I relish painting people in action, particularly children, who bring such vitality to
everything they do, and accomplishing this in a contemporary impressionist style. Unlike
traditional portrait poses, my oils most often appear as 'freeze-frames'; skewed and cropped,
in blurred colors and dynamic poses that capture a 'moment in time.'"
Chuck is a member of the American Society of Portrait Artists as well as the Portrait Society
of America and the Arts Alliance of Waukesha County. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Waukesha County Art Museum, and is a past
member of the Membership Committee of the Milwaukee Art Museum. He is also a member of the
League of Milwaukee Artists, the West End Artists Association, and the Waukesha Creative Arts League.
A frequent guest lecturer on the subject of Creativity, Chuck is the recipient of over
two-dozen national awards. His work is on display in many private as well as corporate
collections, including NBC, Honeywell, Kraft/General Foods, Northwestern Mutual, Acuity Insurance, Marquette University, Trek
Bicycles, CBS Sports, Dean Foods and many more.
