1. Once you have decided to have a work created, the first step is to discuss the "spirit" of
the portrait; the tone and manner as well as any physical requirements of the artwork. Chuck’s
oil portraits are "narrative". . . works that express a mood or tell a story, so it’s
important to get a feel for the subject’s personality.
As opposed to traditional, static portraits, Chuck’s preference is for more dynamic,
interesting poses, where the subject is captured in a "moment in time" This "freeze-frame"
style has become his signature trademark.
2. From this information, a final fee is determined and a commission agreement is signed.
3. Chuck then reviews reference photographs you may already have, or he will shoot several
rolls of film of the subject. This photo session normally takes 1 - 2 hours. From these, you choose the images and expressions that
capture that special "spark of energy". There is no charge for this photo session,
as Chuck generally prefers working from his photos, where lighting is closely controlled, and
the facial anatomy clearly defined.
4. From these photos Chuck will compose the painting, prepare color studies and make color and
background recommendations for your approval.
5. The final portrait is rendered in the studio. While typically a portrait is completed in
4 to 6 months, rush orders are sometimes possible.
