Painting "Live" At the World Equestrian Games
This fall I had the great honor of being the Kentucky Horse Council's Featured Artist at the World Equestrian Games in Lexington, Kentucky. Each day from 10am til 3pm I painted LIVE at the Kentucky Horse Park, capturing each of the 8 World Championship Events being contested over the 16 days of the event. It was a spectacular event...with nearly 1000 contestants from 60 countries participating, and over 700,000 attendees. This was the first time the event has been held in the US, which takes place every four years, between the Olympics. My art was also featured on the cover of the Horse Council's 2010-11 Equine Directory.

NEW "POWER & LIGHT" SERIES
I recently started a new series of high contrast, high drama pieces focusing on subjects filled with light and color, shadow and movement . . . runners, bikers, rowers and the like. Actually their roots go back to a pair of large commissions I did for West Bend Insurance. I really enjoyed the energy and "play of light," so in the continuation of this series I have "pushed" the color saturation and skewed and rotated the movement where appropriate until they have become almost abstract. The intended result is Fauvist paintings with lots of "dynamic tension." These paintings are all over-sized gallery wraps and thus far have been very well received. Send me an e-mail and let me know if you like them. |

"ARTiquities," |
 |
|
Created using heavy gel mediums and distressed substrates, these nouveau fresco oils pay homage to the classic sculptural style of Renaissance Italian and French Masters like Bernini, Donatelo, Parmigianino and Carpot. It is Chuck's objective to bring color and richness to the figurative poetry and anatomical flow of the classic style of these Masters.

The Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra's new conductor, Edo deWaart |
|
Chuck was recently commissioned to create a portrait for the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, of it's celebrated new conductor, Edo deWaart.... on the back of a retired symphony violin. TWO FIRST PLACE WINNERS!
|

While I am first and foremost a portrait and figurative artist, painting outdoors "en plein air" is a terrific learning experience. This past month I had the chance to participate in both the Wauwatosa Plein Air and Oconomowoc "Mid-Summer Brush" Plein Air Competitions. Was lucky enough to win both events, including a healthy $1500. check at Oconomowoc. Cool!

PAINTING AT THE CALATRAVA
|
Pix of "Live" paint at the Milwaukee Art Museum Calatrava. I was again invited to paint for the opening of their Spring Exhibition "Art in Bloom." Lots of fun. As usual, did a switcho-chango on my assigned "floral" subject.

POPE BENEDICT XVI AND ARCHBISHOP TIMOTHY J. DOLAN PORTRAITS |
 |
|
Chuck was very honored to have been commissioned to paint formal
portraits of His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI and Archbishop
Timothy J. Dolan for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. The portrait
of the Archbishop was completed and dedicated in 2006. The
Pontiff’s portrait was completed this past year and formally
dedicated at St. John’s Cathedral in Milwaukee last fall.
Both portraits now hang on either side of the entry foyer of the
Cathedral.

ICONICS
|
Iconics are a fresh new take on classic icons. Each high drama original is a singular interpretation that explores color as value, line as mood and the anatomy of the face as landscape. This past summer, Chuck was honored to be invited to exhibit his originals "Lennon" and "Sgt. Pepper John" as part of the "Art Of John Lennon" Exhibit at the Waukesha County Museum . . .

RHYTHMS OF NATURE
|
|
With this series Chuck's goal is to capture the movement and harmony of the landscape, with "impasto" heavily textured supports and bold brushwork to heighten the natural flow and color palette of nature's canvas. There is a profound harmony in nature . . . an order and balance within apparent randomness, as distant hills dissolve into the horizon and rows of ordered crops become the fabric of the landscape in a symphony of form and color. CHASE WEB |
 |
 |
So who and what is a "Chase Web?" Click on the CHASE WEB button to find Chuck's "altered ego" paintings. Done in a Fauve-Expressionist style, these new paintings
pay homage to the style of early 20th century Cubist/Expressionists like Amidei Modigliani.
Done in a more stylized, graphic manner, they are painted with a more limited palette
and capture lighter, romanticized subjects. The first Chase Webs have been extremely
popular, with originals selling quickly. Canvas Giclee Reproductions are now available
for most pieces, and new works are now available. |

FAVRE FOUNDATION BENEFIT . . . It was a great honor for Chuck to be able to paint a live portrait of Brett and Deanna
Favre. The occasion was a Celebrity Fund Faiser sponsored by the Favre Fourward Foundation at the Grand Casino in Biloxi, Miss. to benefit Breast Cancer. The portrait was painted "alla prima" (live) on stage the day of
the event, and was one of six items auctioned off that evening as part of a gala Banquet that culminated in a spectacular
concert by Faith Hill. The $500 a plate event raised more than $500,000.
Working mostly from Favre family photos, Chuck started the painting about 9 am, and finished just moments before it was auctioned off
that evening. The high bidder at the auction was the Favre's agent and attorney, "Bus" Cook, who outbid Deanna, paying $6000.
He then gave the portrait to the Favres.

FAVRE PAINTING SETS NEW RECORD . . . Chuck's new "live" painting of Brett Favre set a record for the Bryon Riesch Paralysis Foundation at the Annual Fundraiser Golf Outing, June 2, 2008. Each year Chuck donates a "day" to the Foundation, painting live for this worthwhile charity. This year the event was truly memorable! Starting at 10am Chuck painted live in front of 240 golfers and later nearly 500 Dinner and Auction attendees. The triple oil portrait of Favre, titled "Huck Finn" was completed at 6pm, and then sold at Auction for $8100. Better still, 82 closed edition prints were then ordered by attendees (sight unseen) at $250 each. Thanks to Brett's popularity and the generosity of the terrific folks attending the event, while the painting was still wet a total of $28, 6000 was raised in just over 10 minutes, helping to swell the total for the night to over $200,000! Awesome!
